Thermal Field Analyzers

Various models of infrared systems, including a new series called "Thermal Field Analyzers" (TFA) are being developed in B.Verkin Institute for Low Temperature Physics and Engineering (ILTPE) of NAS of Ukraine. TFAs are the first Ukrainian thermal imaging systems based on uncooled multi-element matrices of microbolometers. TFAs are compact, self-contained, possess high-level technical parameters and convenient design, are equipped with versatile original software that enable TFAs for solving any task of infrared thermal analysis.

The technical specifications and design of each TFA model depend on the specific task to be solved

Technical specification of the basic TFA model
 Detector FPA
* Number of elements  384 õ 288
 Spectral range, mm 8-14
Operating temperature, K  300
 * Spatial resolution, mrad* 1
 * Temperature sensitivity* at 300C, 0Ñ   0,07
 * Frame rate, Hz 20
 * Field of view*, deg . 22H x 18V
 * Measured temperature range -20…+300

            * The parameter may vary to fit the task

The multifunctional original TFA software with a block structure is easily customized if one needs to change or add functions, create a joint interface to combine the analyzer with other equipment, etc.

Basic functions of TFA software

  • Visualization of thermal images in real time;
  • Measurement of absolute temperature at any point or area;
  • Using different image palettes;
  • Measurement of relative temperature referenced to a preset temperature at any image point;
  • Building temperature profiles in arbitrary position and directions;
  • Marking a region the temperature which is greater than (less than, equal to) the reference one, calculation the region area;
  • Automatic detection of the maximum, average and minimum temperatures of the entire image ora selected fragment;
  • Various filtering options;
  • Quick-viewing images during the camera operation;
  • Voice commenting;
  • Printing thermal images, etc.

 Created in ILTPE, about three dozen infrared imaging systems of different models, including the ATP series, are successfully used at enterprises and institutions of Ukraine to solve energy saving tasks, non-destructive testing of materials and equipment, medical diagnostics, environmental monitoring, scientific research, etc.

 Energy saving: detection of heat leaks and heat transfer agent leaks, verification of thermal insulation efficiency, remote measurement of temperature, thermal resistances and thermal losses of enclosing structures.

(Inspection of the thermal insulation of a liquid ethylene storage in Kalush (photo and thermal image), thermal image of a residential building taken from a 400 m distance )

 Technical monitoring: detection of defects in any equipment (thermal, mechanical, electrical, etc.) “on the go” (during operation). Thermal diagnostics of machine moving parts (bearings, couplings, axle boxes, etc.).

(Photo and the corresponding thermal image of a fragment of turbogenerator stator).

  Non-destructive thermal control: detection of hidden defects in materials and structures by the active thermography.

(A photo of a sample of composite material used in aircraft industry and its thermal image with detected modeling defects).

 Medical infrared thermal imaging: a non-invasive method both for various diseases diagnostics, and monitoring disease dynamics and effectiveness of treatment for venous and arterial problems, burns and frostbites, diseases of the musculoskeletal system, various inflammatory processes, malignant and benign tumors, etc.

(The layout of the pelvic bones and the infrared image with thermal imprint on the skin of the metastasis in the hip joint)

 Environmental monitoring: detection of gas and oil leaks from underground utilities; control of protective shells of radioactive waste; detection of ducts in dams; detection of zones of underground ignition of coal dumps, ignition of peatlands and forest tracts; assistance with emergency rescue activities, etc.

(Thermal images of the Zasyadko’ mine pit from a distance of 1.5 km with a detected source of underground ignition).

  Criminology and customs control: search for traces of people's stay; the timing of the incident using thermal traces; detection of hidden objects, voids, caches in walls and panels; surveillance, security, etc.

(Thermal image of a man touching the door and thermal imprint of his palm 10 min. later; the thermogram of a man with a gun under thick sweater

Scientific research: in any physical, chemical, mechanical and biological processes with the release or absorption of heat

(The infrared study of the temperature regimes of the melt/crystal during the growth of CsI crystals; the microthermogram of a part of the nail phalanx skin at the human finger, obtained with ATP with an additional lens).

  Agriculture:  temperature monitoring in greenhouses and fields, search for lost animals, diagnostics of animal diseases, identification of a sick animal in the herd, etc.
