Ukraine (1990), Honored Science & Engineering Researcher of Ukraine (1998),
Honorary Professor of the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research of

V.G.Manzhelii, born in Kharkov 3d May, 1933, graduated from Kharkov State
University (1955), worked as an assistant lecturer at Kharkov State University
(1955 - 1960). Since 1960 he is a researcher at
B.I.Verkin Institute for Low
Temperature Physics & Engineering of the NAS of Ukraine. V.G.Manzhelii was the head of the Department for thermal properties of molecular
crystals at this Institute (from 1962 to2007), is the chief researcher (2007-2013).
The main scientific
interest is concerned with the thermal properties of solids and disordered
systems (cryocrystals, quantum crystals, high-frozen biological objects, fullerites, gas hydrates, solid monoatomic alcohols,
carbon nanotubes). |
V.G.Manzhelii and collaborators
have studied the effects of zero orientational oscillations, rotational motion
and orientational disordering of molecules upon the thermal properties of solid
gases (cryocrystals). The glass-like behavior of cryocrystal solutions and many
new impurity-induced effects have been detected and investigated in the thermal
properties of crystals at low temperatures. The kinetic and equilibrium
properties of quantum molecular crystals have been studied and quantum diffusion
detected in solid deuterium. Negative thermal expansion of fullerite C60 has
been revealed at helium temperatures. Nuclear spin conversion has been detection
in CD4. Polyamorphism of orientational glasses has been found. Glass-like behavior of the thermal conductivity of clathrate hydrates has been detected in
a wide interval of temperatures (2-200 K).
A significant decrease in helium transfer by a superfluid film at the solid
parahydrogen surface has been found.
V.G. Manzhelii is an author and co-author of
200 original papers and seven monographs:
